Zasięg występowania
Rodzaj obejmuje gatunki występujące endemicznie w Indiach (Kerala, Tamilnadu, Ghaty Zachodnie i Maharasztra)[3].

Etymologia
Melanophidium: gr. μελας melas, μελανος melanos „czarny”[4]; οφις ophis, οφεως opheōs „wąż”[5].
